How Do I Know If I Have Mold in My Home?
The most obvious way you’ll know you have mold is if you see it. It may be dark in color or may appear fuzzy on light-colored walls, ceilings, and floors. However, because mold tends to grow in dark, and damp areas that you don’t frequent often, you may suspect you have mold long before you see it. Signs that you may have mold in your home include:
- A strong, unusual, or musty odor
- Past water damage in your home
- Health problems/conditions (rash, coughing, nosebleeds, congestion, wheezing, etc.)
- Water stains on walls, floors, ceiling
What to Do If You Find Mold in Your Home
If you find mold in your home, don’t panic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), molds are common in homes. But don’t delay in having it removed, either. Mold can cause serious damage to your home, and your health, particularly if you’re sensitive or allergic to mold.
Contact a reputable mold removal and remediation company to schedule mold testing for your home. If you need help selecting a company, look for a company that uses MICRO certified remediation contractors. These individuals have been professionally trained to remove mold. They are also trained to correct underlying moisture issues.
What Is Involved in Mold Remediation?
Mold remediation begins with mold testing to identify the location(s) of mold in your home. Mold testing will let you know the extent of the mold growth.
The collected samples are then sent to a lab for testing to identify the type of mold and the level of mold in your home. From there, a mold removal plan will be designed.
Removing Mold from Your Home
Mold removal involves the containment of mold-infested areas of the home and the physical removal of all materials that are contaminated with mold. Once all mold is removed, all wet materials will be cleaned and dried.
Added Protection Against Mold
Mold remediation also involves further safeguarding you and your home from mold. Suggestions include using a HEPA air filter, and thorough cleaning with EPA registered products. You may also be advised to use a specially formulated primer to protect your home from future mold growth.
After the process of mold remediation is complete, a test will again be run to ensure that all the mold has been removed from your home. Once you receive the “all-clear” results, you’ll know that your living space has been restored, and you and your family are safe.
